2024 Sustainable Community Grants: Building a Greener Future

11/25/2024

Delmarva Power and the Delaware Nature Society have revealed the recipients of their 2024 Sustainable Community Grants, allocating $40,000 to support initiatives in reforestation, sustainable transportation, affordable housing, and composting. These grants are part of their shared mission to foster sustainability across the region by strengthening community resilience and improving access to green spaces.

"Our communities are central to our mission, and these investments enable us to support both people and the planet,” said Phil Vavala, Delmarva Power Region President. "With this funding, organizations can advance critical projects like promoting cleaner transportation, enhancing wildlife habitats, and educating communities on sustainable practices—efforts that will benefit our region for years to come."

Since its inception, the Sustainable Communities Grant Program has distributed over $235,000 over four years to support open space and resilience initiatives across Delaware and Maryland.

Jennifer Adkins of the Delaware Nature Society added, "These modest grants have a significant impact. Each project contributes to cleaner air, water, habitats, or energy, making Delaware and the region healthier today and more adaptable to the effects of climate change tomorrow."

The 2024 grant recipients and their projects include:
Delaware Wild Lands, Inc. ($10,000): Volunteers will help restore 3.2 acres of forest and meadow at the Roberts Farm site, while creating an interpretive trail and a terrace platform for public events and educational programs, aimed at nurturing future environmental stewards. Plastic Free Delaware, Inc. ($5,000): The project focuses on equipping four community gardens, particularly in underserved areas, with tools and education to produce high-quality compost, improving soil health and reducing waste. Milford Housing Development Corporation ($10,000): To enhance energy efficiency, new homeowners will receive an eco-friendly Go Green Lawn Equipment package, including electric mowers or tools, reducing both carbon emissions and noise pollution. Urban Bike Project of Wilmington, Inc. ($10,000): This initiative promotes sustainable transportation options like biking and walking to connect residents with jobs and resources while reducing carbon emissions, air pollutants, and runoff into waterways. Whitehall Community Garden Association ($5,000): Partnering with Lorewood Grove Elementary School, this project will establish a combined community and school garden to promote health, nutrition, education, and community engagement.
These grants are a cornerstone of Delmarva Power’s broader strategy to support Delaware and Maryland in meeting their clean energy and climate objectives. In alignment with Exelon’s "Path to Clean" initiative, Delmarva Power is working toward a 50% reduction in operational emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero operations by 2050, while empowering communities to reduce their carbon footprints.
