Dailycsr.com – 21 March 2020 – Kirk Borne works in Booz Allen’s “data science and AI” sector and is among the top speakers and digital influencers in Data Science, AI and Big Data. At Booz Allen Borne holds the post of an “Executive Advisor” which happens to be the “first and only Principal Data Scientist” of the firm. In 2019, Borne had been named as the “first and only Data Science Fellow” of Booz Allen. However, Borne’s work has been of an astrophysicist.
Borne joined Booz Allen in 2015, prior to that he has been part of various projects at NASA such as the “Hubble Space Telescope and NSF projects” which include “the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope”. Borne used his expertise in “large scientific databases and information systems, scientific data mining and management, and informatics” for a better comprehension of the space. Moreover, he was also an “astrophysics and computational science” professor at George Mason University.
Booz Allen Hamilton further reported:
“The American Astronomical Society (AAS) recognized Borne for his achievements in astrophysics with a new accolade, AAS Fellow. AAS Fellows are recognized for original research and publication, innovative contributions to astronomical techniques or instrumentation, significant contributions to education and public outreach, and noteworthy service to astronomy and society. In addition to this new honor, in 2016, Borne was elected Fellow of the International Astrostatistics Association for his contributions to the advancement of astroinformatics throughout the world”.
Borne has harboured a passion for “data” and related discovery for his work with “machine learning and data mining” stemmed from “astronomy and space science data”. Later on he specialised in “researching” and then using these algorithms and techniques for various “types and domains” such as digital marketing, smart energy, climate data, earth science, transportation, finance, and healthcare to mention some of them. In Borne’s words:
“I have always loved scientific discovery, and this world [of data analytics and data science] allows me to do discovery bigger and better all the time. I enjoy the challenge of modeling a system in a way that explains the data and that enables prediction and deeper understanding from the data.”
At present, in Booz Allen, Borne use his knowledge of data science and astronomy together to create “the intersection of space, data science, and AI”. Here are some of the projects that have been envisage in this line, as mentioned by Booz Allen:
“Data science and visualization to optimize trajectories that return spacecraft safely to earth “A digital model for NASA’s planetary exploration systems that captures every element from requirements to the physical structure and shows how changes to one affects the other “Algorithms, AI and machine learning models to increase domain awareness in space” Borne joined Booz Allen in 2015, prior to that he has been part of various projects at NASA such as the “Hubble Space Telescope and NSF projects” which include “the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope”.
