Welcome to Culture in Focus, a series where we shine a light on the distinctive workplace culture at NRG by sharing stories from our greatest asset: our people. Our shared values and outlook define how we serve millions of customers, and we’re excited to present conversations that highlight how we bring our purpose to life.

In this feature, we had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Curci, Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

Brian is a championship football player, a devoted fan of Philly cheesesteaks, and a true team player. He’s the kind of grounded advisor you’d want by your side during life’s pivotal moments—those crossroads where you’re figuring out the best path forward.

Brian’s journey to building an exceptional team is deeply intentional, rooted in fostering a culture of authenticity and collaboration.

“Great workplace culture is built by what everyone contributes and a shared belief in the company’s mission. It’s about working in a place where you feel you belong, surrounded by people you want to work alongside,” said Brian.

He emphasizes that such a culture can’t be artificially created—it must be genuine. He adds that it’s also vital for success. Reflecting on NRG’s ethos, Brian notes, “I think about the DNA of this company, and I’ve seen that when we’re tested, we’re at our best. That’s when we’re strongest—because those moments bring out our collaborative spirit.”

For Brian, challenges provide opportunities for growth, and teamwork is a critical survival skill. This principle also defines his leadership approach. “I rely on everyone to play their role,” he says, highlighting how collective input leads to the most innovative solutions.

The outcomes of teamwork, he explains, are more rewarding. “I don’t find joy in taking sole credit for achievements. I want the company to succeed as a whole, and I strive to lead in a way that brings people together.” It’s an inspiring perspective from someone tasked with upholding and driving NRG’s high ethical standards.

Brian’s approach is reminiscent of legendary basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K), who led Duke University to more wins than any other Division I men’s basketball team over his 42-year career. Beyond his accomplishments on the court, Coach K is celebrated for his leadership philosophy.

“Don’t take your culture for granted,” he said. “There needs to be a constant renewal of values that fosters camaraderie.”

Brian embodies this mindset, consistently nurturing a culture of collaboration, integrity, and shared purpose at NRG. His leadership serves as a reminder that success is a collective effort—and that’s what makes it so impactful.
