L’Oréal addresses social and economic crisis for women and environmental challenges caused by COVID-19 pandemic.

Dailycsr.com – 25 June 2020 – In an attempt to provide environmental protection as well as support “vulnerable women” in the post “Covid-19 pandemic” effect, L’Oréal has started a “€150 million” programme. The programme called “L’Oréal for the future”, an initiative of the “global beauty firm” has been designed to cater to the women who were “first victims of the social and economic crisis” caused by the worldwide pandemic.

The “charitable endowment fund” is likely to help “field organisations and local charities” to battle poverty besides helping women to achieve “social and professional integration”. Moreover, it also aims to assist “refugee and disabled women” in emergency and establish preventive measures against violence towards women as well as supporting the victims.

History stands testimony of L’Oréal Group’s commitments towards “supporting women”, while according to L’Oréal at present, women have faced a disproportionate effect of the “Covid-19 crisis, particularly in terms of job and income loss”. The Group will provide its support towards the repairing of “natural ecosystems” besides preventive measures against climate change. As a result, it will invest “€100 million into environmental impact” from its sustainable development initiative called “Sharing Beauty with All”.

Fifty percent of the above mentioned fund will go into financing “marine and forest ecosystem restoration projects”, “capturing 15 to 20 million tonnes of CO2”, “creating hundreds of job opportunities by 2030” as well as in the restoration work of “one million hectares of degraded ecosystems”. While, the remaining amount will go into supporting projects on circular economy which aims to address climate change. In the words of the chief executive officer of L’Oréal, Jean-Paul Agon:
“Over the coming months, our societies will face social crises giving rise to situations of great human suffering, particularly for the most vulnerable. At the same time, we are fully aware that environmental challenges are increasingly pressing. It is essential not to step back from the sustainable transformation that the world needs.
“We therefore wish to reaffirm our commitment to the environment and to the preservation of biodiversity, and to help mitigate the social crisis for women. These two causes reflect the values and the historic commitment of L’Oréal.”

Similarly, the Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer at L’Oréal Group, Alexandra Palt added:
“The Covid-19 crisis spares no one, but it also exacerbates existing inequalities, with particularly devastating effects on people who were already struggling socially or economically or are victims of abuse, especially women.
“It is essential that we take action to support the most vulnerable women. This social crisis has not eclipsed the need for a strong commitment to the environment.
“If we are to find a sustainable and inclusive way to move past this crisis, we must also focus on preventing climate change and the erosion of biodiversity, which now threaten to even more profoundly and violently shake our lives, our societies, and our economies, once again with women as the first victims.”
