Empowering STEM Education: Chemours Champions Science Fair Sponsorship

04/23/2024

For the Chemours team, the communities where we operate are not just places of business, but also our homes and playgrounds. Our success is intertwined with theirs, so we invest our time and resources to create a positive impact. Our primary objective is to foster vibrant communities, and we're committed to achieving this through a $50 million investment in enhancing access to STEM education, sustainable environmental programs, and safety initiatives. One of the ways we're fulfilling this commitment is through the Chemours Future of Engineering, Science, Trades, and Technology School Partnership Program (ChemFEST).

Last year, Chemours Belgium teamed up with Technische Scholen Mechelen (TSM) to establish the first ChemFEST partnership outside the US. This three-year collaboration aims to underscore the importance of STEM education and ignite students' passion for science and technology. Isabel Welters, a Nafion™ Technical Service Specialist at Chemours, spearheaded the comprehensive initiative to revamp the school's STEM facilities, with plans to unveil the upgraded technical lab and classrooms by mid-2024.

In addition to the ChemFEST partnership, Welters, along with the Belgium Chapter of the Chemours Women's Network (CWN), has played a crucial role in various STEM-related activities. One such event, "Str@ffe Madammen," organized by Welters and the CWN, attracted over 150 female students from TSM, offering them insights into STEM career opportunities. Furthermore, the team recently organized a special STEM day at the Mechelen plant for 40 students, providing them with a firsthand look at the Coatings Production facilities and Technical Services.

Meanwhile, in our headquarters state of Delaware, the Chemours team marked a significant milestone in the development of the Chemours STEM Hub at EastSide Charter School in Wilmington. Following the groundbreaking ceremony in February 2023, Chemours team members, along with community partners and school officials, commemorated the placement of the final beam in the 24,000-square-foot facility.

Expected to open its doors by early 2025, the Hub will serve as a premier hub for STEM education and other developmental opportunities in the Wilmington community. Made possible in part by a $4 million grant from Chemours in 2021 through the ChemFEST program, the Chemours STEM Hub will provide public spaces for learning, ensuring greater access for students from diverse backgrounds to engage with and be inspired by STEM.

“We know that shaping the world's future requires great innovators and problem solvers from all backgrounds; it’s why we are committed to taking action and championing change toward a more diverse STEM workforce. Through partnerships – like our ChemFEST school partnership program – we’re helping to support future STEM talent by nurturing students and members of communities who have been underserved, under-resourced, and often overlooked,” said Chemours Chief Brand Officer, Alvenia Scarborough.

Earlier this year, the team at our Chambers Works manufacturing site in New Jersey continued their longstanding tradition of sponsoring the Salem County Science Fair, which has spanned over three decades. This fair provides students with an opportunity to apply their STEM education knowledge, aiming to progress to the Delaware Valley Science Fair and beyond.

Students delve into their specific areas of interest, gathering and analyzing data while adhering to the scientific method and presenting their findings to volunteer judges. Chemours awarded a total of $2,500 to the various winners of the fair. This sponsorship is part of a broader Vibrant Community grant totaling $275,000, in which the Chambers Works team collaborates with Salem Community College (SCC) and local middle schools to facilitate hands-on learning experiences, nurturing a lifelong passion for STEM.

Brian Boettler, Senior Consultant in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) at Chemours, spearheads this partnership on behalf of the site. "Engaging with local schools and the community college is gratifying. Each of us contributes in our own way to support the upcoming generation, and this is vividly evident at the Science Fair," Brian noted.

These instances exemplify Chemours' dedication to cultivating greater interest and diversity in STEM careers by backing students in our communities. We take pride in our role in shaping the industry's future and making a positive impact on communities by inspiring the next cohort of STEM leaders.
