Essity Targets Net Zero Emissions by 2050 with SBTi Validation

09/13/2024

Hygiene and health company Essity has had its goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation covers all near- and long-term objectives within Scope 1, 2, and 3. Essity’s roadmap aligns with the U.N. Global Compact's “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” initiative.

The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. In the near term, Essity targets a 35% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions (those related to company operations and purchased energy) by 2030. For Scope 3 emissions (which include purchased goods, transportation, waste, and end-of-life treatment of products), the target has been revised from an 18% to a 35% reduction by 2030, all relative to 2016 levels.

"Climate change is a defining challenge of our time, and Essity is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Our progress is fueled by a sense of urgency, innovation, and close collaboration with customers, partners, and suppliers," says Magnus Groth, Essity’s President and CEO.
