How Crown’s Twentyby30 Program Drives Sustainability Goals with Global Impact

09/19/2024

This year, we continue to hold ourselves accountable for the commitments we've made to our stakeholders, advancing Crown’s Twentyby30™ program. Now, more than two years into this journey, it’s essential to reflect on those commitments and the progress we’ve achieved so far.

In this report, you’ll see that we are transparent about where we've made strides and where there is still work to be done. We recognize that reaching our ambitious goals, both as a company and within our industry, requires a collaborative effort. Such collaboration is only possible through clear communication and transparency.

Since the launch of Twentyby30™ in 2020, our focus has been not just on setting goals but on outlining the steps necessary to achieve them. Setting targets is one thing, but the true challenge lies in consistently advancing toward them. While progress may not always follow a straight path, we are steadily moving forward, confident that we will reach our goals by 2030. As we continue, our approach will remain thoughtful, manageable, and effective.

In 2022, we made significant progress in key areas of the Twentyby30™ program. For instance, under our Climate Action pillar, we are actively pursuing renewable energy opportunities, expanding solar installations at both new and existing plants, and securing large-scale renewable projects. Regarding circularity, we co-hosted the first Global Aluminium Can Sustainability Summit with the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) and the International Aluminium Institute, sparking vital discussions within the industry on driving sustainability efforts forward. This event brought together the entire aluminum supply chain to explore actionable strategies for meeting industry-wide sustainability objectives.

We are also committed to responsible sourcing of raw materials. In 2022, we achieved certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) for our beverage can operations in Mexico, affirming our ethical practices within the supply chain. This follows the ASI certification of our operations in Brazil, with plans to expand these efforts to other regions.

Furthermore, we’ve strengthened our collaboration with key organizations to support global efforts in addressing climate change. Our commitments to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the CEO Water Mandate ensure we remain accountable for implementing resource-efficient measures and working with partners to achieve broader sustainability goals.

These initiatives have garnered recognition from our peers in sustainability. Newsweek named us one of America’s Most Responsible Companies, and we were ranked among the 100 Best Corporate Citizens of 2022 by 3BL Media, as well as being included in Forbes' inaugural list of the World’s Top Female-Friendly Companies. We’re particularly proud that Sustainalytics ranked us in the top 3% of the containers and packaging industry for the third consecutive year, out of more than 100 global companies.

I want to express my sincere thanks to our global teams for their creativity, passion, and dedication in driving this meaningful change. You are the ones making the Twentyby30™ program a reality. While there’s still time before we reach the finish line, we are on the right track, continuously advancing. We are progress in motion.

Thank you,
Tim Donahue
