Culture in Focus: Celebrating NRG’s People-Centered Workplace
At NRG, we believe our culture is brought to life by the people who make up our organization. That’s why Culture in Focus is all about showcasing the stories of our greatest asset — our employees. This edition spotlights Gin Kinney, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, whose leadership and personality have made a lasting impact across the company.

Gin is known for her genuine warmth, engaging sense of humor, and strong leadership. She heads up a multifaceted team responsible for brand strategy, communications, sustainability initiatives, philanthropy, and talent development — all of which play a critical role in advancing NRG’s broader mission and objectives.

A Team That Leads with Heart
Gin’s leadership style is deeply rooted in appreciation for her team. “The most fulfilling part of my role is working with such a dedicated group,” she shares. “This team is resilient and driven — we’re constantly pushing forward.” She proudly calls her team “the heartbeat of NRG,” a testament to their vital contributions in making NRG a dynamic and purpose-driven place to work.

What sets Gin’s team apart is their balance of high energy and strong camaraderie. “Sometimes the pace is fast and intense,” she laughs, “but everything we do comes from a place of genuine passion and heart.” This unique blend of drive and empathy is what fuels meaningful collaboration across the organization.

Fostering Culture Through Communication
For Gin, clear communication is the cornerstone of a strong workplace culture. “You can’t build a healthy culture without prioritizing communication,” she emphasizes. “When people understand the direction we’re headed, we can align our efforts — and that alignment allows us to work together more effectively.”

This clarity creates space for individual perspectives to flourish while keeping everyone united under a shared purpose. “We don’t all have to be the same to move in the same direction,” Gin says. To her, a strong culture isn’t about uniformity — it’s about shared intent and mutual support.

Vision-Driven Leadership
Gin understands that culture is reflected not just in words but in daily actions and choices. As a seasoned communicator, she values the power of language, but she also believes behavior is what truly defines a company’s culture. “Culture shows up in how we treat one another, how we lead, and how we hold ourselves accountable,” she explains.

As a key member of NRG’s executive leadership team, Gin plays a crucial role in shaping strategy, setting direction, and evaluating success. “Culture influences how we attract, develop, and retain talent,” she notes — making it a foundational element in driving organizational growth and purpose.

Championing Diversity and Career Growth
Gin is a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in leadership. “As a female executive, I believe it’s essential to create pathways for more women to grow and succeed in our organization,” she says. Reflecting on her own journey and the support she received from diverse mentors, Gin highlights the importance of allyship in developing future leaders.
She’s excited about NRG’s shift toward a more skills-focused approach to professional development. “We’re moving beyond traditional job titles and focusing on how people can grow their capabilities,” she says. “That means more mobility, more upskilling, and more opportunities for people to take their careers in new directions.”

Looking Ahead: A Culture That Evolves with Purpose
Gin is proud to be part of an organization that is both honoring its legacy and reimagining its future. “What’s exciting about NRG today is that we’re not just providing energy — we’re innovating to create more sustainable, customer-centric solutions,” she says.

Quoting Malcolm Forbes’ idea that diversity is “the art of thinking independently together,” Gin believes that collaboration across different perspectives is the foundation of a thriving culture. She also sees leadership as a mindset rather than a title: “Leadership exists at every level. It’s about how you show up and take ownership.”

By leading with intention, fostering inclusivity, and emphasizing open communication, Gin is helping shape a workplace where everyone can contribute, grow, and succeed.
