Jose Barrios: From Sales to Successful Restaurant Owner in Missouri

09/24/2024

From his early days in sales in Mexico to working in construction around Kansas City, every job Jose Barrios held has moved him closer to his goal of owning a restaurant. "If you don’t have a dream, you don’t have a direction," said Barrios, who, alongside his wife, runs Royal Biscuit, a popular breakfast spot in Blue Springs, Missouri. "I approached several banks, but none really guided me. They simply said, 'You need this,' and left it at that."

That's when Jessica Jordan stepped in to offer real support as Barrios grew his business. Barrios became one of her first customers as branch manager at the U.S. Bank Blue Springs North location. Over the years, Jordan and her team have assisted Barrios with everything from setting up checking accounts for his employees to planning the expansion of his business.

"I was looking for a place to open a second Royal Biscuit," Barrios shared. "Instead, I had the chance to buy a creamery, and I thought, 'Why not?' It's something new, and it supports the local community." He acquired Odessa Creamery, located about 30 minutes away, which now serves ice cream and hamburgers in Odessa. The creamery had been in operation for over 50 years before Barrios took ownership.

“We were his first stop to open a business account and set up credit card processing through U.S. Bank’s Elavon,” said Jordan. “Jose always says he makes friends, not customers. That’s how we feel whenever he comes by. We’re not just his bankers; we’re his friends, supporting him through every step.”

Reflecting on his journey, Barrios acknowledges the importance of the people who helped him along the way. For years, he juggled two jobs, working from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. His resume includes fast food, construction, and experience in both breakfast and Mexican restaurants, before taking the leap to open Royal Biscuit.

“I truly enjoy helping business owners like Jose,” said Steve Sickmeyer, a Small Business Banking specialist who works with Barrios. “Seeing a business thrive brings the community together and sparks growth and energy.”

Barrios continues to focus on expanding his business and is actively seeking a second location for Royal Biscuit. “U.S. Bank has helped me keep moving forward,” Barrios said. “You can’t do it all on your own. It takes a community of support to achieve success, care for others, and make dreams come true.”
