Leo’s 50-Year Journey at Viatris: Leadership, Innovation & Impact

02/19/2025

As Leo stands in his office, overseeing the entrance of Viatris' dynamic workspace in the Netherlands, he reflects on the five decades that have defined his career. From his early administrative role to his current position in strategic projects, Leo has been a steady and reliable presence within the company.

His journey into the pharmaceutical industry was unplanned. A friend departing for military service asked Leo to take over his position at one of Viatris' predecessor companies. At the time, Leo was also helping his father manage their family’s milk delivery business, which served 400 households in the heart of the Netherlands.

"Watching my father’s dedication to customer service taught me invaluable lessons about efficiency, reliability, and meeting customer needs," Leo recalls. "But I wanted to be part of something bigger—something that could create a broader impact. I was drawn to working in a team environment where I could apply those same principles. That decision led me to interview with one of Viatris' legacy companies, and I was hired on the spot by the head of the administration department, where my career began."

As the company evolved, so did Leo.

Transitioning from administrative work to sales and product management, he later took on the responsibility of overseeing supply chains—most notably during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership played a crucial role in ensuring the continued availability of Viatris' medicines, despite widespread disruptions in logistics and supply. For Leo, the work was never just about fulfilling tasks; it was about a greater purpose—delivering life-saving treatments to patients around the world.

Over the course of his career, Leo has witnessed 11 mergers, each bringing new challenges and opportunities. Embracing change with a mindset of adaptability and teamwork, he played a pivotal role in driving innovation in a rapidly evolving industry. His extensive experience and willingness to mentor colleagues have solidified his status as a cornerstone of the company.

"Looking back on my 50 years here, I find inspiration in our mission to help people lead healthier lives at every stage," Leo reflects. "That purpose has fueled my passion and commitment."

In 2023 alone, Viatris provided over 26 million packs of medicine in the Netherlands and reached more than a billion patients globally. These numbers serve as a constant reminder to Leo of the profound impact his work has on individuals and communities. Knowing that his efforts contribute to patients’ well-being remains a powerful motivator.

Beyond his professional achievements, Leo is a strong advocate for workplace inclusivity, particularly for older generations. Through his own example, he champions the value of experienced employees, emphasizing that feeling appreciated and included is crucial for maintaining energy and passion at work.

"I want my colleagues—no matter their age—to feel valued and empowered. A workplace that fosters inclusivity and respect for all generations becomes stronger. That’s what makes Viatris a great place to work," he says. "Being seen as an ‘anchor’ of our company in the Netherlands is something I take great pride in."

But Leo’s journey is more than just professional—it’s deeply personal. After finishing a day at the office, he heads to the athletic field to watch his grandchildren play football. Their joy and energy remind him why his work at Viatris is so meaningful.

"Seeing my grandchildren thrive reinforces the importance of our mission. It motivates me to do my part in ensuring access to high-quality medicines for future generations," he says. "Our work at Viatris touches every stage of life, from birth to old age, and knowing that we contribute to global health makes every effort worthwhile."

Viatris thrives because of individuals like Leo—dedicated professionals who believe in the power of their work. His story exemplifies the company’s commitment to valuing employees, fostering growth, and inspiring leadership driven by passion and purpose. It is this dedication, among other factors, that led to Viatris Netherlands earning the Great Place to Work certification in both 2023 and 2024.

Leo’s contributions have positively impacted countless lives, and his legacy will endure long after his retirement.

"Through our work, my colleagues and I strive to ensure that future generations, including my grandchildren, have access to the medicines they need. This mission fuels our dedication and drives us to keep making a difference. I hope to inspire younger colleagues to carry forward this passion, pride, and energy—because in the end, teamwork remains the key to success."
