Today, Novelis Inc., a global leader in sustainable aluminum solutions and a pioneer in aluminum rolling and recycling, released its sustainability report for the fiscal year 2023 (from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023). The report underscores the company’s advancements towards its sustainability objectives, which include crucial environmental indicators, workforce safety, diversity and inclusion, and community involvement.
The company has made strides towards its objective of decreasing total carbon emissions by 30% by 2026 from its FY2016 baseline, achieving a 14% reduction in FY23 (covering scopes 1, 2 & 3). A significant part of Novelis’ sustainability approach is to minimize carbon emissions by integrating as much recycled aluminum as feasible into its offerings. During the fiscal year 2023, the company reached a global recycled content level of 61% across all product lines. In the same timeframe, Novelis recycled 2.3 million tonnes of aluminum, which included over 82 billion repurposed beverage cans.
"I am very proud of our achievements this year, particularly our emissions reduction and recycled content numbers," said Steve Fisher, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novelis Inc. "We believe that maximizing aluminum's circularity is the most effective way to decarbonize, and Novelis is leading the industry on that front by expanding closed-loop recycling partnerships with customers, investing in additional recycling capacity, and creating new alloys and processing methods to increase our use of recycled metal inputs. The success of these and other recycling initiatives help ensure we continue to deliver on our Purpose of Shaping a Sustainable World Together."
Besides the significant achievements in total CO2 reduction and recycling, the report also emphasizes other notable accomplishments such as: • A 17% reduction in carbon emissions intensity from the FY2016 baseline • A 10% decrease in waste to landfill intensity from the FY2020 baseline • Contributions of $7.5 million to philanthropic endeavors • Establishing a strategic partnership with FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a nonprofit organization that exposes students from pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade to engineering, coding, and robotics.
