The Principal Charity Classic has unveiled its 2024 Sustainability Report, highlighting its ongoing dedication to integrating sustainable practices throughout the tournament. This year’s report emphasizes notable advancements in environmental conservation, community involvement, and the development of partnerships to promote sustainability across Central Iowa.

Key Highlights from 2024:
Waste Diversion and Reduction: The tournament increased its waste diversion rate to 23.7%, up from 13.9% in 2023, aiming for 40% by 2025. This progress was driven by collaborations with Iowa Waste Exchange, Metro Waste Authority, SEI Investments Company, and St. Vincent de Paul to recycle, repurpose, and compost materials. Energy and Emissions Reduction: Partnering with MidAmerican Energy, the event provided 88.5% clean energy to the Wakonda Club and retired Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to lower its carbon footprint. The tournament remains on track to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. Community Engagement: Initiatives like Pedal to the PCC encouraged attendees to bike to the event, reducing emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation. Additionally, over 4,400 pounds of food were donated to local communities through a collaboration with Supply Hive. Sustainability Grove: This new feature allowed attendees to interact with local organizations promoting sustainability, raising public awareness about environmental responsibility. Expanding Partnerships: In 2024, the number of sustainability partnerships doubled. Collaborations with key partners such as MidAmerican Energy, Salesforce, and GreenState Credit Union strengthened waste diversion efforts, while new alliances with groups like Des Moines Water Works and Trees Forever supported clean energy initiatives, water conservation, and reforestation projects.
“At the Principal Charity Classic, we are committed to supporting Iowa’s youth while championing sustainability,” stated Alex McCarty, Tournament Director. “With the continued backing of Principal and our partners, we are setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious event management.”

The Principal Charity Classic maintains alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, cementing its status as a leader in sustainability efforts within the PGA TOUR Champions.
