Saint-Gobain Launches CarbonLow: Low-Carbon Gypsum Wallboard in Canada for 2025

11/06/2024

Saint-Gobain, through its subsidiary CertainTeed Canada Inc., has introduced CarbonLow a new low-carbon gypsum wallboard that will be available in Canada in 2025. This innovative product offers up to 60% less embodied carbon from cradle to gate compared to traditional wallboard, allowing contractors and homeowners to enjoy CertainTeed’s trusted quality while reducing their environmental impact.

Unveiled by Saint-Gobain Canada’s CEO, Julie Bonamy, at CertainTeed Canada’s annual Architecture Symposium, CarbonLow marks Saint-Gobain’s first low-carbon wallboard product in North America. It will be produced at CertainTeed’s gypsum facility in Ville de Sainte-Catherine, Quebec, which is set to become North America’s first zero-carbon gypsum wallboard plant (scopes 1 and 2) and the largest of its kind globally. To achieve this, CertainTeed is modernizing equipment and transitioning from fossil fuels to hydroelectric power supplied by Hydro-Quebec.

“CarbonLow is not only a new, high-quality option for our customers but also a significant step toward our commitment to decarbonizing the built environment,” said Julie Bonamy. “Our investment in Canada over the past three years underscores our dedication to providing sustainable solutions for our stakeholders nationwide.”

The CarbonLow product line includes popular wallboard solutions like Easi-Lite, Type X, M2Tech, and GlasRoc, offering a complete range of essential gypsum cladding products for various building sectors, including commercial, residential, and industrial. This lower-carbon wallboard provides architects with sustainable options for their designs without requiring contractors to change standard installation methods. Saint-Gobain’s commitment to sustainable construction in Canada also includes several recent milestones:
In June, Saint-Gobain acquired The Bailey Group of Companies, a Canadian leader in metal framing solutions. This acquisition is the third in three years following Kaycan (2022) and Building Products of Canada (2023), tripling the company’s presence in Canada. In May, Saint-Gobain partnered with TimberHP to offer wood fiber insulation, becoming the exclusive Canadian distributor of this high-performance material. In February, a heat recovery system was installed at the Vancouver gypsum plant, cutting scope 1 carbon emissions by up to 15%. By 2023, the Vancouver facility had recycled over 1 million tonnes of gypsum wallboard back into production, with similar recycling initiatives in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.

With over 160 manufacturing sites across Canada and the U.S., Saint-Gobain’s workforce plays an essential role in meeting the company’s sustainability objectives.
