Southern Company Gas, along with its philanthropic branch, the Southern Company Gas Foundation, contributed over $11 million in financial donations last year to more than 600 nonprofit organizations across its service areas. These efforts benefitted around 4.5 million people in Georgia, Illinois, Tennessee, and Virginia. The donations were directed to initiatives that aligned with the foundation's key priorities: social justice, economic mobility, environmental sustainability, and community enrichment.
James Y. (Jim) Kerr II, chairman, president, and CEO of Southern Company Gas, emphasized, "Our company is deeply committed to investing in initiatives that drive community transformation and growth. We're focused on fostering opportunities that uplift those we serve. Since 2020, we've allocated over $50 million in donations to communities in our service regions."
For over 160 years, Southern Company Gas, along with its local distribution subsidiaries—Atlanta Gas Light, Chattanooga Gas, Nicor Gas, and Virginia Natural Gas—has worked in partnership with community organizations to address local challenges through charitable donations and impactful volunteer experiences.
Serena Levy, president of the Southern Company Gas Foundation and vice president of corporate impact, added, "Our commitment extends beyond financial contributions. We're dedicated to engaging with our communities through the expertise and time of our employees. Together, we provide comprehensive support, driving programming, connecting resources, and volunteering for various community initiatives."
Key donations included support for justice-involved individuals reentering society, workforce development programs for skill-based jobs, reforestation of native species, environmental conservation, scholarships for education, and health and human services for those in need. The company also pledged around $700,000 to United Way and its local chapters to combat food insecurity and provide essential services like health, education, and housing.
Additionally, the company’s employee resource groups collaborated with the foundation to allocate $100,000 to nonprofits in line with their focus areas. Charitable efforts were further supported by over 900 employees volunteering, including at more than 50 events during the holiday season to assist families in need.
