Dailycsr.com – 22 January 2016 – During the “Historically Black Colleges and Universities Community Challenge” for the year 2015, the top prize of “$25,000” has been bagged by a students’ team from Spelman, who are working on the development of “The Giving Kitchen”.
The presentation was made by Ford Motor Company at the Spelman College, demonstrating the features of the programme, wherein the “hydroponics and aquaponics” have been combined so that people living in the cities can nurture their own gardens even in limited spaces. Likewise, city dwellers can even grow their garden products in “shoe boxes or plastic bins” without taking into account any seasonal or climatic changes.
However, three finalists were selected, namely Spelman, “Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University”. Amid these final contestants Spelman stole the show.
The wining grant will help the students of Spellman in implementation part of their proposal that made them number one. The grant is an effort dedicated to boost enthusiasm of the Atlanta community’s children to lead a healthy food habit which also promotes “low-cost, sustainable gardens”.
Ford has been helping the Atlanta community for a long spell of time, whereby history stands witness to Ford’s social services towards the Atlanta community. In fact, so far, the company has contributed over “$36 million” for the development and the welfare of Atlanta through various projects like “Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta Day Shelter, the Atlanta Food Bank, The Children’s Museum, and Hope House, among others”.
Ford Motor Company along with its branch “Ford Motor Company Fund” has been encouraging students to enrol in the HBCU for three consecutive years till now. The students submit their “proposals in a competition” and the winner earns the scholarship and in turn contributes to the communities.
