Sustainable Packaging Innovations at MilliporeSigma: Reducing Waste and Enhancing Safety

07/19/2024

Engineers at MilliporeSigma, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, in the U.S. and Canada, are enhancing the sustainability of packaging. They are transitioning from non-recyclable packing peanuts to biodegradable alternatives and reducing packaging material sizes, all while maintaining safety and quality. This effort is significant, given their extensive portfolio of over 300,000 products and the daily dispatch of about 50,000 shipments.

Each initiative is part of the company’s SMASH Packaging plan, which focuses on creating more sustainable packaging for both new and existing products. To date, these initiatives collectively save over 400 metric tons of packaging materials annually.
