Technology infuses health tracker in VSP’s eyewears.

Dailycsr.com – 24 August 2016 – The University of Southern California CBC came together with VSP Global to develop the latest edition of “tech-embedded eyewear”, called Level, through “a major academic study” accompanied by “consumer pilot test” of the same.

The Shop, innovation lab of VSP, launched the first versions of the wearable which integrated “health-tracking technology into the temple of an optical frame”, under the title of “Project Genesis” in the year of 2015.

Subsequently, the abovementioned partnership took place, which aimed to unite the digital health technology’s “multidisciplinary experts” at CBC and the platform along with “engineering future versions of the frame” that was created by The Shop. In the words of the Founder as well as the Executive Director of USC CBC, Dr. Leslie Saxon:
“Our partnership with VSP Global will accelerate research and discovery as to how to create digital health products and experiences that will elevate, enhance and expand the lives of users. This study is the first of its kind and will provide a crucial roadmap for validating future products and platforms and for understanding overall consumer health engagement.”

The pilot study will involve the employees of USC, while the participants will get “a Level frame” along with a smart-phone app for tracking their activities. The “Eyes of Hope® initiative” of VSP will sync with the participants’ app, while the app will collect points the participants who reach their “daily step goals”. When a user arrives at a “certain” accumulated point, someone in need will be given “a comprehensive eye exam and a pair of glasses”. The Shop’s Co-Lead, Jay Sales, added:
“As a community-based not-for-profit, we’re curious not only about the technology and how it can benefit the individual utilizing it, but also about the motivations that drive certain behaviour. Connecting Level to our Eyes of Hope initiative was a perfect way to  explore how technology within a platform as common as eyewear could increase health and wellness as well as empathy and opportunity for someone in need.”
