Webster Bank Expands Financial Empowerment Initiative with YWCA Partnership

05/06/2024

In honor of Financial Literacy Month, Webster Bank and YWCA Hartford Region recently marked the launch of the Webster/YWCA Hartford Region Finance Lab in Hartford, Connecticut. The initiative aims to equip women and girls in YWCA programs like YW Career Women and the Young Women’s Leadership Corps (YWLC) with essential financial skills and knowledge, empowering them to plan for a financially secure future and long-term independence. Webster provided a $100,000 grant to support these programs.

This collaboration reflects Webster Bank's commitment to corporate social responsibility and its mission to make positive contributions to the communities it serves. By investing in programs that empower individuals and foster economic growth, Webster Bank is actively contributing to the development of stronger and more resilient communities.

The Webster/YWCA Hartford Region Finance Lab is a key component of Webster's broader initiative to enhance financial literacy and empower youth and young women in low- to moderate-income communities. Marissa Weidner, Webster’s Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer, emphasized the importance of financial skills in opening doors to new opportunities for the next generation and families in the community.

Adrienne W. Cochrane, Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Hartford Region, expressed gratitude to Webster Bank for their support, highlighting the significance of the grant in empowering women and girls in the Hartford Region with essential financial education. The grant will provide foundational resources and tools to instill financial literacy, teaching participants the value of money and essential financial practices such as saving, budgeting, spending, and investing.

The official launch event, held at YWCA’s office, was attended by Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, State Senator Douglas McCrory, state elected dignitaries, and Commissioners Andrea Barton Reeve, representing the CT Department of Social Services and serving as Board Chair for YWCA Hartford Region, alongside leaders from Webster Bank and YWCA Hartford Region.

“As Mayor of our capital city, I am proud to see this partnership between Webster Bank and YWCA Hartford Region,” said Mayor Arulampalam.

“This grant will directly benefit families in our community by providing education on the core tenets of financial responsibility—debt, budgeting, saving, and investing. We thank YWCA Hartford and Webster Bank for believing in Hartford with a program like this that will uplift women, girls, and their families.”

The Finance Lab at YWCA is one of two Webster Finance Labs set to open in Connecticut this year and the fourth to be established across the bank’s network since the initiative began in 2022. Webster intends to reveal upcoming Finance Lab collaborations with nonprofit organizations in Long Island, Rhode Island, and Boston, Massachusetts.
