Principal Financial Group welcomes the community to its global headquarters in Des Moines on World Cancer Day, Tuesday, February 4, for an educational event in partnership with the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The event will feature keynote speakers Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation, and Dr. Susanna Greer, Chief Scientific Officer, who will share insights on the importance of cancer research, its role in improving health and wellness, and inspiring stories of resilience and hope.
According to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, cancer remains the second-leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, the 2024 Iowa Cancer Registry reports that Iowa has the second-highest cancer rate and the fastest-growing incidence of new cancer cases nationwide.
Founded by ESPN and legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano, the V Foundation for Cancer Research is dedicated to achieving "Victory Over Cancer" and saving lives. To date, the organization has allocated nearly $400 million toward cancer research across North America.
“At Principal, we are proud to partner with the V Foundation to advance cancer research and inspire hope,” said Jo Christine Miles, director of the Principal Foundation and Principal Community Relations.
“This World Cancer Day event brings our community together to emphasize the critical importance of ongoing research and investment in combating a disease that touches so many lives. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to health and wellness, we can make meaningful progress toward Victory Over Cancer.”
Principal Launches Move to Make a Difference Challenge
Principal also announced its commitment to supporting cancer research through the "Move to Make a Difference" challenge. Between January 13 and June 30, 2025, employees will aim to collectively log one million miles of physical activity, raising one million dollars for the V Foundation. For every mile logged through the Charity Miles app, Principal will donate $1 to support groundbreaking cancer research.
“We’re excited to collaborate with Principal on this global initiative,” said Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation. “The passion and dedication of the Principal team will drive innovation, foster teamwork, and bring us closer to achieving Victory Over Cancer.”
