Exploring Pride, Allyship, and Personal Interests: A Reflection

06/25/2024

What does Pride mean to you?
To me, Pride embodies authenticity, deliberate intentionality, and a welcoming attitude towards diverse ways of life. As Admiral Grace Hopper famously said, "Humans are allergic to change. They love to say, ‘We’ve always done it this way.’ I try to fight that." Pride is about embracing my true self and creating an environment where others can also feel secure in being themselves.

What advice would you give to allies interested in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community?
Remain curious! Listen actively, ask questions, and seek out resources, such as books and media, to broaden your understanding. Recently, I found Ann Leckie's "Translation State" to be particularly enlightening. It beautifully integrates the use of neopronouns into its narrative, helping to normalize inclusive language practices.

It's crucial to connect with each person's dignity and humanity rather than categorizing them broadly. Personally, I identify as nonbinary without a strong preference for specific pronouns, as long as it's clear I'm being referred to respectfully. Educating oneself and practicing respectful language are essential steps in supporting the community. Take a moment to reflect on conversations rather than speaking on behalf of or over individuals.

What are some of your interests outside of work?
Beyond work, I enjoy gardening, hiking, swimming in the ocean, and relishing the outdoors with my dog, Belle. Belle adores "The Zoomies," barking at squirrels, and playing in water (though she strictly prefers ground water to sky water!). When I'm not at my computer, I'm often engaged in artistic pursuits, pondering various topics, playing games with friends, or finding other enjoyable diversions.
