Since 2016, NRG - particularly our Cedar Bayou power plant - has proudly partnered with the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) in support of their mission to protect and improve Galveston Bay for future generations.
The GBF leads this mission through five core initiatives: education, habitat restoration, water quality protection, land conservation, and advocacy, all grounded in scientific research and collaborative efforts.
Our relationship with GBF spans several years and includes support for projects like the EcoCenter/Native Nursery, educational outreach programs, Oyster Fest, and the Bike Around the Bay event.
In recognition of this ongoing collaboration, NRG was honored with the Guardian Gala Award in November. Senior Vice President and dedicated volunteer, Matt Pistner, accepted the award on behalf of the company.
“I was truly honored to accept this award on behalf of NRG and our 18,000 employees nationwide who are committed to environmental responsibility,” Pistner shared. “This recognition holds special significance for our Cedar Bayou team, as the EcoCenter is located right at the plant.”
At the EcoCenter, the GBF utilizes the land to grow marsh grasses and native prairie plants used in habitat restoration efforts. NRG supports this work by leasing the facility to GBF at a symbolic rate of just $1 per year.
“This recognition is even more meaningful because it comes from our own community—a place where many of our employees live and work,” Pistner added.
