Duke Energy Supports Sustainable Education & Innovation in Pinellas Schools

01/13/2025

Thanks to a long-standing partnership with Duke Energy Florida, the Duke Energy Foundation, and the Pinellas Education Foundation, thousands of students gain exposure to real-world economic principles and innovative engineering concepts, empowering them to achieve their full potential both inside and outside the classroom.

The Duke Energy Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Pinellas County Schools’ Future Cities program, enabling students in grades six through eight to explore and develop sustainable solutions addressing energy, land conservation, and environmental challenges. Through this initiative, middle school students conceptualize, research, design, and construct future cities that tackle citywide sustainability issues.

Duke Energy also renewed its ongoing sponsorship of the Stavros Institute’s Enterprise Village and Finance Park, which attracts thousands of elementary and high school students from across Florida. These programs teach essential economic principles, the dynamics between businesses and consumers, and sound personal finance decision-making. Last school year, over 14,000 students participated in the program.

“Enterprise Village and Finance Park have become some of the most popular and innovative educational destinations in Pinellas County,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president. “Many of our employees and retirees cherish their experiences at Enterprise Village, whether as students, volunteers, or chaperones, reflecting the enduring impact of the Pinellas Education Foundation’s programs on our communities.”

This year, Duke Energy Florida modernized its storefronts at Enterprise Village and Finance Park to showcase advancements in energy efficiency and sustainable practices. These upgrades include features like thermal cameras, virtual reality experiences, and renewable energy tools, offering students a glimpse into a smarter, brighter energy future. Duke Energy – previously known as Florida Power Corporation – has supported Enterprise Village since its launch in 1989.

“Duke Energy is a dedicated supporter of the Pinellas Education Foundation,” said Kim Jowell, the foundation’s CEO. “Their longstanding commitment to our flagship programs, Enterprise Village and Finance Park, is invaluable.

“This year, we are especially thrilled to see them provide opportunities for students to develop sustainable solutions for energy and environmental challenges,” Jowell added. “Duke Energy demonstrates how investing in education enriches student learning and drives academic success.”

Over the past four decades, Duke Energy Florida, its predecessor organizations, and the Duke Energy Foundation have contributed more than $4 million in grants, donations, and sponsorships to the Pinellas Education Foundation.
