Fighting Hunger in New Jersey: PSEG's Support for Local Food Banks

12/11/2024

Nearly one million residents of New Jersey face food insecurity. However, by working together, we are making a meaningful impact. PSEG is deeply committed to fostering partnerships that provide essential support, including the Community Food Bank of New Jersey (CFBNJ), a leading organization in the fight against hunger.

Through its extensive network of over 800 partners—including food pantries, soup kitchens, and programs that serve children and seniors—CFBNJ ensures that nutritious food reaches those who need it most. PSEG is honored to contribute to their mission of ending hunger for families across the state.

From 2024 to 2026, the PSEG Foundation will allocate $250,000 in grant funding to support CFBNJ's critical initiatives. This funding will bolster programs such as after-school meal deliveries, supplemental food assistance for children, job training opportunities, and resources to help individuals make healthy food choices on a budget.

This year alone, hundreds of PSEG employees have volunteered with CFBNJ, participating in activities like sorting and distributing food. In early November, a team of 15 volunteers distributed 548 cases of turkeys and other poultry for the Thanksgiving Distribution Program at Branch Brook Park. They also prepared over 2,000 holiday boxes, supporting more than 57,000 meals.

Another impactful organization in the fight against food insecurity is the Food Bank of South Jersey, which serves Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem counties. With support from the PSEG Foundation, this organization goes beyond providing meals by offering practical tools like cooking demonstrations and grocery store tours to help residents make healthier food choices.

Additionally, the PSEG Foundation partners with HomeFront to support its Food Pantry Program, which offers free resources and services to low-income families. By alleviating the burden of food costs, HomeFront helps families stabilize and allocate their income toward other essential needs.

One HomeFront client shared:
"After losing my job, money was very tight for my family. My grandkids live with me, and I refuse to let them go hungry as I did at their age. For the first time in my life, I had to ask for help, and I’m so grateful for HomeFront. Now, the baby has diapers, my granddaughter has school supplies, and I have ingredients to make nutritious meals."

Together, we’re not only combating hunger but also creating opportunities and strengthening communities throughout New Jersey.
