KeyBank Foundation Donates $150,000 to COTS for New Supportive Service Role
The KeyBank Foundation, KeyBank’s non-profit charitable organization, has pledged to donate $150,000 over three years to The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS). This donation will be used to fund a new supportive service role in COTS’ Housing program. COTS is a non-profit organization based in Burlington that works towards finding long-term solutions to end homelessness. They provide emergency shelter, services, and long-term housing for Vermonters who are homeless or marginally housed.

For over 40 years, COTS has been working with people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. They offer a range of services including two family shelters, two overnight emergency shelters for single adults, a daytime drop-in center, and four transitional and permanent housing facilities. Additionally, they operate the COTS Housing Resource Center, which is dedicated to helping households in financial crisis avoid homelessness or find housing more quickly if they are homeless.

“KeyBank has long been a pivotal partner to COTS, and we are thrilled to be able to offer enhanced programming and engagement to our formerly homeless residents thanks to KeyBank’s investment in our work,” said Jonathan Farrell, COTS’ Executive Director.

KeyBank's contribution will facilitate COTS in employing a Housing Community Enrichment Liaison (CEL) with the aim of boosting COTS' initiatives to maintain housing and bolster their existing affordable housing lineup. The CEL's responsibility will involve engaging COTS inhabitants in discussions about their well-being and prospects for an enhanced quality of life within their accommodations. Subsequently, the CEL will execute these identified opportunities across COTS' various properties (namely,

The Wilson, Saint John’s Hall, Canal Street, 95 North Ave, and eventually Main Street Family Housing). The array of activities planned encompasses a broad spectrum of wellness pursuits, ranging from music, art, and photography to storytelling, memoir writing, meditation, therapeutic movement, recovery, gardening, and cooking classes. An especially distinctive objective of this undertaking is to establish enduring relationships with community partners focused on wellness, ensuring that these connections persist beyond residents' departure from COTS housing. The allocated funds will cover both staffing expenses and the costs associated with resident-focused program services.

“KeyBank is a long-time supporter of COTS and we are aligned with their mission to house the homeless and find solutions to bring affordable housing to all,” said KeyBank’s Vermont Market President Joseph McGowan while adding, “We’re proud to continue to help them expand needed services and resources that will benefit their clients and our community at large.”

Since 2017, the KeyBank Foundation has made nearly $1 million in transformational philanthropic contributions to Vermont neighborhoods served by KeyBank. This includes over $300,000 in donations to initiatives by The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS). KeyBank has a presence in Vermont with 11 branches located in Barre, Brattleboro, Burlington, Essex Junction, Middlebury, Milton, Rutland, South Burlington, and St. Albans.
