STMicroelectronics Enhances Sustainability and Chip Design Speed with AMD EPYC Processors
How can an R&D data center achieve its sustainability objectives while adapting to the growing complexity of chip design? STMicroelectronics, Europe’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, sought to enhance the speed of chip design while controlling costs and adhering to sustainability targets—and found the solution in AMD technology.

STMicroelectronics specializes in the design and manufacturing of semiconductors, operating at least two data centers in each of its factories, along with additional business infrastructure and cloud support. The demand for data centers is rising rapidly as each new generation of computer chips sees smaller transistors but increasingly complex designs, driving a surge in requirements for data storage and computing power.

The implementation of 3rd Gen AMD EPYC™ processors allowed STMicroelectronics to significantly expedite chip design delivery for its clients while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company reported up to 12% improved performance, up to 30% lower cost per core, and up to 33% reduced electricity consumption in its data centers.

“We are thrilled to have an alternative to other CPUs available in the market and a partner like AMD,” stated Olivier Joubert, DTIT Senior Infrastructure Architect at STMicroelectronics. The company is currently evaluating 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors, which are delivering up to 25% more performance compared to their predecessors.
