Did you realize that most of our packaging can't be recycled if you toss it in your regular household recycling bin? There are a few reasons for this:
- Size Matters: Our packaging is often small, making it more likely to get lost in the recycling process.
- Complex Materials: Many of our packages contain mixed materials that require intricate and expensive separation.
- Residue: Makeup containers frequently retain product residue, making recycling more challenging.
That's why, 33 years ago, we introduced Back-to-M·A·C! It provides a reliable way to divert our packaging from landfills, giving it a second life as new packaging or converting it into energy.
At M·A·C Cosmetics, we recognize the pressing need to protect our planet. Therefore, we've made a tough but necessary decision: we've moved away from offering a free lipstick to customers who return six empty containers. Why? Because we want to do more and create opportunities to support partners who are making significant strides in sustainability.
This year, we proudly announced our collaboration with Plastics For Change, a reputable source of fair trade-verified recycled plastic. Through this partnership, Plastics for Change is on track to collect over 550,000 pounds of plastic—equivalent to an astounding 12,500,000 plastic bottles—from the shores of India. But our commitment doesn't end there! We're also providing support to around 200 plastic collectors and their communities, offering a range of social services for an entire year.
As Shifrah Jacobs, Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer of Plastics For Change, stated, "We are thrilled that M·A·C Cosmetics, a major influencer in the beauty industry, fully understands the importance of plastic recycling. It's not only about investing in innovative technology; it's also about investing in the inclusive development of the individuals involved in plastic collection, who are a vital part of the ecosystem. We are excited about the transformative impact this partnership can have on empowering grassroots communities."
