In a significant progress, in an efforts to construct sustainable and resilient urban communities, CEMEX has just announced that it has contributed substantial amounts of building materials, it’s much valued expertise to urban solutions that have met the most demanding standards of sustainable performance in the construction industry.
So as to ensure that it can meet its proclaimed commitments, last year, in 2014, CEMEX had evolved a sustainable approach that integrates its daily activities with its business strategy. Furthermore, in order to ensure that its commitments are in line with its overall strategy, it has created a Sustainability Committee, which will report directly to the Board of Directors, so that it act as a rudder towards its overall sustainable and strategic efforts.
In order to communicate and showcase its achievements to all concerned, it has released its Sustainable Development Report for 2014 titled “Building Resilient and Sustainable Urban Communities.”
“The 2014 report focuses on one of the most significant trends facing the world today – the increasing challenge of urbanization and the need to invest in resilient infrastructure and resource-efficient buildings, and affordable housing, while mitigating the effects of climate change. At CEMEX, we make every effort to support the development needs of society in a resource-constrained world –- enhancing our products, optimizing our environmental footprint and contributing to the quality of life of the communities in which we operate,” said CEMEX’s CEO, Fernando A. Gonzalez.
Here are the highlights of a few of its achievements which form part of 2014 report:
• CEMEX has completed the humongous task of creating 600 infrastructure projects which needed more than eight million square meters of concrete pavements stretching across 14 countries, including city streets, mass transit projects, highways, and airport runways.
• Has constructed 3,150 resource efficient and more importantly affordable units in 12 countries, corresponding to more than 180,000 square meters of construction.
• Its high impact social initiatives have gone on to benefit more than seven million people. In fact, its social work, has given more than 550,000 families inclusive business opportunities such as Construapoyo, Patrimonio Hoy, and Productive Centers of Self-Employment (PCS).
• Being an industrial leader in the use of alternative fuels, it has led the industry in transforming industrial, agricultural, and municipal waste into fuel for cement kilns. Last year CEMEX’s usage of alternative fuel rose by 28%.
• Thanks to its sustainability efforts it did not allow the emissions of more than eight million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, which roughly translates to the yearly average emissions of 1.5 million cars.
• It minimised Lost Time Injury (LTI) rates by thirty three percent for employees and by twenty three percent for contractors compared to 2013.
Its 2014 “Building Resilient and Sustainable Urban Communities” report includes a limited assurance statement from its auditors, PricewaterhouseCoopers as well as a statement from the company’s Sustainability Reporting Advisory Panel. This has been the case for nine consecutive years.
So as to match its reports with the interest of its stakeholders, its Sustainable Development Report for 2014 has been prepared using the GRI-G4 Guidelines. In it it has opted for the comprehensive “in accordance” option, and has sent a request to the Global Reporting Initiative, so that it can conduct a Materiality Disclosures Service.
To help and facilitate analysts, it has created a special section on its website titled ESG Analyst and SRI Centre wherein direct links to key information such as policies, GRI Index, UNGC COP, SDR, position papers and more have been published.
