Lenovo Drives Sustainability Through Partner Collaboration and Market Trends
Lenovo has announced its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative’s Net-Zero Standard. As one of the leading global technology companies, Lenovo is among the first batch of companies to have its targets endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The validation process for Lenovo's science-based emissions reduction targets commenced in 2018 when the company submitted its short-term objectives for evaluation by SBTi – a collaboration of experts from CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and World Wide Fund for Nature.

SBTi’s pioneering Net-Zero Standard offers companies a clear roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate the severe impacts of climate change and ensure sustainable business growth. A year later, Lenovo remains on course to achieve its interim emissions reduction targets for 2030, marking the initial milestone in its journey toward net-zero. Mary Jacques, Executive Director of Lenovo’s Global ESG and Regulatory Programs, emphasized, “Aligning with climate science and facilitating the transition to renewable energy remain our primary focuses on this journey.”

Lenovo's investment in renewable energy has resulted in a threefold increase in solar energy generation since 2018. Jacques added, “While promoting the transition to renewable energy-powered infrastructure is crucial, our capacity to innovate will play a pivotal role in both our and our customers' transition to a low-carbon future.”

While Lenovo takes the lead in a collaborative and accountable approach to achieving net-zero emissions, it is also dedicated to supporting its customers at various stages of their sustainability journey. In 2021, the company introduced its Sustainability Services, offering customers tools to manage their environmental footprint through customizable solutions spanning the entire lifecycle of devices – from packaging and logistics to warranties and asset recovery services, all aimed at prolonging product lifespan.

“Sustainability can make or break our ability to even be part of the conversation with customers, as more and more enterprises embed it as a ‘must have’ rather than a ‘nice to have’,” commented Matt Zielinski, President of Lenovo’s International Markets. “Sustainability has to permeate every inch of our business; we really have to ‘walk the talk’ and our Net-Zero commitment is our north star that keeps us accountable and on track.”

Alongside its customers, Lenovo is extending its sustainability journey to its channel partners. In 2022, Lenovo introduced the Lenovo 360 Circle, a community platform where partners can converge to align their ESG objectives and capitalize on emerging market trends shaped by sustainability. By dismantling barriers and promoting collaboration throughout its channel network, Lenovo aims to cultivate both individual and collective learning experiences in sustainability.

As more companies adopt emissions reduction targets aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative’s rigorous methodology, Lenovo's leadership anticipates increased opportunities for learning, collaboration, and advancement towards low-carbon innovations. This collective effort spans industries and sectors, all contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future.
