Empowering Women in Tech: AMD and CWiT Champion STEM Careers for Young Girls
The future of women in technology is being enhanced through a partnership between AMD in Dublin and Connecting Women in Tech (CWiT), which provides inspiration, encouragement, and support for their career development. During a 2023 event, Ruth Cotter, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and HR at AMD, met with the AMD Women’s Forum (AWF) in Ireland to explore initiatives aimed at motivating girls and women to pursue STEM careers and bridging the gender gap.

CWiT is a collaborative network comprising over 20 companies dedicated to attracting, retaining, and promoting women in technology. This mission aligns closely with that of the AWF, which advocates for women's involvement in STEM fields and inspires them to enter the tech industry.

Joining CWiT requires a commitment to various initiatives. In 2023, these included supporting the volunteer organization "Teen Turn," the STEM teacher internship program, and the "Digital Futures" STEM engagement initiative.

Introducing girls to STEM at an early age and fostering their confidence is crucial for promoting gender equality and enhancing diversity in the workforce. Teen Turn empowers young girls from underprivileged backgrounds by helping them develop essential problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity, thus preparing them for future careers in innovative industries.

In 2023, AMD hosted Teen Turn participants, secondary students aged 15 to 16, at their Dublin office for a two-week summer experience, allowing them to gain valuable insight into the tech industry.

To inspire innovative learning, AMD collaborates with the Dublin City University STEM Teacher Internship Programme, funding two interns annually for a 12-week period, primarily in engineering. This experience equips teachers with practical engineering knowledge, enabling them to inspire young children about STEM.

Additionally, as part of the Digital Futures Initiative, AMD engineers visit schools to deliver engaging presentations about careers in technology. This program aims to increase students' awareness of the diverse career opportunities within the tech sector and to promote STEM careers across Ireland. In 2023, more than 1,000 young individuals participated to learn about STEM careers.
