The 2024 Environment+Energy Leader Awards has honored MilliporeSigma, the U.S. and Canada Life Science arm of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, for its innovative endeavors aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of scientific research and manufacturing. Specifically, the company clinched the Top Project accolade in the Environmental Impact category for its initiatives under the Greener Products and Solutions (GP&S) program.
MilliporeSigma also received the prestigious "Judges’ Choice" distinction, garnering the highest score from judges' evaluations in the category. This special recognition stemmed from a series of pioneering projects that stood out for their remarkable accomplishments in the eyes of the judges.
The judges commended the GP&S program as "a robust initiative that effectively showcases the positive influence that pharmaceutical industry suppliers can wield in curbing plastics, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions."
The GP&S program of MilliporeSigma was lauded for integrating sustainability into every phase of the product lifecycle, facilitated by SHAPE, a pioneering design framework for sustainability. Furthermore, the judges were impressed by the company's expanded portfolio of 2,504 greener alternative products, marking a 34% increase from 2022. Moreover, the company's efforts in enhancing packaging sustainability resulted in annual savings of over 400 metric tons since 2019. Additionally, its proprietary DOZN™ tool, a quantitative green chemistry evaluator, has been adopted by over 2,170 scientists across 78 countries, driving the advancement of environmentally friendly practices.
Demonstrating a commitment to fostering the ethos of sustainability among the next generation, MilliporeSigma has extended its partnership with Beyond Benign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to green chemistry, inspiring over 834,000 students to engage with sustainability through chemistry.
