Dan Amos, the longtime CEO of Aflac (AFL), is committed to promoting equality and diversity within the company. In Japan, where Aflac generates nearly 70% of its revenue, Amos noticed a lack of female representation in executive roles. He requested the senior leadership team in Japan to provide a list of qualified female candidates for promotion. Despite two years of discussions, the Japanese leadership did not present any names. In response, Amos declined to approve a list of male promotions submitted to him. He remarked, "God touched them that night," and soon after, they presented a suitable female candidate. In 1997, Mikie Yumoto became Aflac Japan's first female senior vice president.
