Enhancing AI Education: TCS goIT Program's Future Pathways and Insights
To prepare future global professionals for the responsible and effective use of generative AI (GenAI), Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently hosted a summer camp focused on this rapidly evolving technology. This pilot program, held from June 4-6 at a Go Innovate Together (goIT) camp in Milford, Ohio, is among the first in the U.S. where a leading technology company integrates GenAI into STEM education for middle and high school students.

The initiative captured the interest of both students and parents, who are generally accustomed to restrictions on AI use in educational settings. TCS’s effort is in line with Ohio’s new guidelines for AI in classrooms. TCS and Ohio officials believe that leading in technological advancements, rather than merely reacting to them, can enhance economic prospects, expand talent pools, and foster innovation.

During the camp, TCS introduced its GenAI Technology Learning Pathway to around 70 students aged 11 to 17. Participants engaged with GenAI learning modules, discussed Responsible AI, learned basic prompt engineering, and explored how GenAI could address global challenges. They were tasked with creating concepts to support one of the U.N.'s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using GenAI as part of their solutions. The SDGs focus on human and environmental issues, including poverty alleviation, inequality reduction, and climate action. At the end of the camp, students pitched their digital innovations in a competitive environment.

Among the over 10 innovations presented were ideas for a mobile app that customizes meal plans and grocery lists using GenAI, a robot designed to clean the ocean floor, and a computer extension aimed at reducing academic dishonesty.

Priya Dayal, Center Operations Lead & CSR/DEI Champion at TCS, expressed enthusiasm for the event: “What an incredible three days at TCS’ Cincinnati Global Delivery Center. We welcomed 70 outstanding students from more than 25 school districts in the Tri-State area (Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana). They delved into GenAI, learned fundamental skills, and developed remarkable projects.”

The pilot program was significant in several ways: it highlighted the current and future importance of GenAI technology, prepared students for future careers involving GenAI, and demonstrated how GenAI could help solve major global issues.

“By integrating GenAI into the curriculum, TCS is equipping students with essential skills for the evolving technological landscape. This initiative not only prepares them for future job roles but also empowers them to achieve their career aspirations,” said Dr. Paul J. Bailo, a digital transformation professor at Columbia University. “By educating young minds on leveraging GenAI for the betterment of society, TCS is showcasing the profound potential of GenAI to revolutionize the way we live and work.”

TCS’s goIT program provides various educational pathways such as mobile app design, microprocessors, the Internet of Things, and AI/machine learning. The company plans to use insights gained from this pilot to enhance future student programs focused on AI.
