Montclair State & PSEG Expand Green Teams Sustainability Program

11/25/2024

The Montclair State University Foundation has received a $1 million grant from the PSEG Foundation to enhance and expand the Green Teams internship program, run by the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies. This two-year funding will bolster the program’s efforts to address environmental and climate issues in New Jersey, coinciding with its 10th anniversary. The Green Teams initiative equips undergraduate students with the skills and experience needed to contribute to sustainability efforts while advancing their careers.

Since its launch, the program has provided students with opportunities for internships, green jobs, and entry into graduate programs. Teams of students collaborate with community partners to conduct sustainability research, analyze environmental and economic data, and propose strategies to promote sustainable practices in businesses and organizations. To date, 420 students from across the United States have completed over 350 projects, benefiting 53 communities, nonprofits, and companies with sustainability-focused solutions.

Supporting Underserved Communities
A key goal of this grant is to assist New Jersey municipalities and nonprofit organizations that lack the resources to pursue sustainability initiatives. These projects will address critical issues such as flooding, food security, and waste management, promoting environmental justice. The funding will cover intern stipends, travel costs for fieldwork and training, and expert-led advanced workshops. The results of the Green Teams’ work have already empowered communities to address pressing environmental challenges.

Enhancing Technology and Training
The grant will also facilitate the use of cutting-edge technologies, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), drones, and virtual reality (VR/XR), to manage increasingly complex projects. Interns will also receive enhanced training in professional communication and survey techniques, with an emphasis on fostering partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and community colleges.

“As we celebrate the Green Teams program’s 10th anniversary, we’re proud to support its growth,” said Calvin Ledford Jr., President of the PSEG Foundation and Director of Corporate Social Responsibility. “This program embodies the spirit of sustainability and provides students with valuable real-world experiences while addressing critical environmental needs in underserved communities.”

Celebrating a Decade of Success
As the program marks its 10-year milestone, the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies will host events to showcase alumni achievements, reflect on past successes, and highlight the program’s impact. Alumni and partner organizations will share how the Green Teams have driven progress in sustainability and contributed to the personal and professional development of participating students.

“We’re thrilled to continue building on the incredible impact we’ve made over the past decade,” said Amy Tuininga, Director of the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies.
