Logitech Eliminates Single-Use Plastic Packaging for a Greener Future
Logitech International has made significant strides in phasing out plastic clamshell packaging for its signature mice products, with the transition to paper now nearing completion. This initiative is expected to eliminate approximately 660 tons of plastic and cut down 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions—comparable to removing more than 37 million single-use plastic water bottles each year. The shift to paper packaging is being implemented globally across millions of products sold by various retailers, with full completion anticipated by the end of 2025.

"Moving away from plastic clamshell packaging represents a major milestone in our commitment to eliminating single-use plastics from our product lineup," said Delphine Donné, General Manager of the Personal Workspace Solutions division at Logitech. "With nearly 90% of this transition already achieved, it stands as our most extensive packaging initiative so far. Prior to this, we successfully reduced 1,800 tons of packaging materials by optimizing design elements across our product packaging. Each step forward brings us closer to eliminating single-use plastics entirely."

A custom study, conducted in partnership with GlobeScan’s Healthy & Sustainable Living report, found that 61% of consumers worldwide are inclined to opt for recyclable packaging in the coming year. Single-use plastics and multi-material packaging contribute to excessive waste and create uncertainty regarding recyclability. While Logitech strongly supports full material recycling, variations in waste management systems worldwide often hinder effective disposal. As a proactive measure, the company is eliminating single-use plastics at the source.

“Consumers are increasingly prioritizing environmentally friendly packaging. Switching from plastic to paper not only reduces environmental impact but also improves the user experience—making packaging easier to open, more visually appealing, and informative,” said Bliss Buter-Thompson, Logitech’s Head of Packaging. “Additionally, this transition allows us to optimize package size and weight, further reducing the product’s carbon footprint while meeting customer expectations.”

Product design plays a crucial role in sustainability, influencing nearly 80% of a product’s overall environmental footprint, including material selection and efficiency. Through its Design for Sustainability initiative, Logitech has adopted packaging solutions that lower environmental impact. This includes an FSCTM-certified paper packaging program launched in 2019 and a Single-Use Plastics Policy introduced in 2021. The company has also eliminated plastic shrink wrap in its Logitech G gaming division and incorporated recyclable alternatives such as paper pulp hang tabs and wood fiber bags for various products.

The removal of single-use plastic packaging is a key component of Logitech’s larger sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions and enhancing product circularity.
