Empowering Iowa Youth: Principal Charity Classic and Sammons Financial Group Launch Community-Driven Work-Based Learning Program with Greater Des Moines Partnership
The Principal® Charity Classic, supported by Sammons Financial Group, is collaborating with the Greater Des Moines Partnership to transform the Legacy Project into a community-driven work-based learning program. This initiative aims to prepare young individuals, especially those at risk of not graduating or facing challenges in securing employment, for future career opportunities.
Fueled by the proceeds from the Principal Charity Classic, the primary goal of the Legacy Project is to expose youth to various professional and technical skills. These skills include financial planning, customer service, teamwork, collaboration, delegation, and communication, thereby enhancing their knowledge and confidence.
The Greater Des Moines Partnership will take charge of administering the Program and will develop a standardized curriculum and work-based learning model. This curriculum will be integrated into existing summer youth internship programs across Iowa, commencing in 2024 in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The funding will also support weekly learning sessions, networking opportunities, and skill-building activities for the summer interns.
Ken McCullum, board chair for the Principal Charity Classic, emphasized that the Legacy Project aligns with the event's mission of improving the lives of Iowa's youth. The initiative aims to empower underrepresented or underprivileged students by providing them with essential skills to overcome current and future challenges.
In its role as the Program administrator, the Greater Des Moines Partnership will engage with community organizations, gather data, coordinate weekly learning sessions, train organizations in the curriculum, and maintain and update the curriculum.
Jenae Sikkink, Senior Vice President of Talent Development and Inclusive Strategies for the Greater Des Moines Partnership, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the project as a significant step toward empowering youth. She looks forward to contributing to the development of skills and confidence in young individuals to better prepare them for their futures.
The Legacy Project, initiated in 2020 with funding from Sammons Financial Group, initially donated $50,000 to The Directors Council (TDC), a Des Moines-based nonprofit committed to addressing racial disparities and inequities in employment, education, financial inclusion, health, and housing.
