KeyBank Foundation Awards $20K Grant to Springfield Boys & Girls Club for Summer Brain Gain Program

07/19/2024

The Springfield Boys & Girls Club is excited to share that it has received a $20,000 grant from the KeyBank Foundation, the philanthropic arm of KeyBank N.A., to support its Summer Brain Gain Program. This grant will aid in running the program, which is structured into one-week modules with engaging, themed activities that adhere to common core standards. The program emphasizes learning through exploration, creative expression, and teamwork, helping members prevent summer learning loss and stay prepared for the next school year.

Vincent Borello, Executive Director of the Springfield Boys & Girls Club, expressed gratitude for the KeyBank Foundation’s support: “We are incredibly thankful for the KeyBank Foundation’s generous contribution to the Summer Brain Gain program. This support will allow us to enhance the resources and opportunities available to the youth in our community.”

The club primarily serves children from low-income families, with 65% coming from homes where English is a second language, which can impact their reading skills and overall academic performance. Borello added, “We believe every child deserves a nurturing and safe environment for growth and learning. This grant from KeyBank brings us closer to that vision, and we’re eager to continue our partnership to positively impact the lives of our young members.”

On June 26, KeyBank representatives presented a ceremonial check to Borello and the club members. During the event, local bankers conducted a “Banking Basics” financial literacy workshop for around 40 teens. KeyBank’s commitment extends beyond charitable donations; the bank also provides financial resources to nonprofits that support academic achievement, particularly for minority and low- to moderate-income students.

Abigail Gawron, a KeyBank personal banker who led the financial literacy session, remarked, “Teaching teens about money management is essential for their future success. It provides them with the tools to make wise financial choices and avoid common mistakes. We view investing in young people’s financial education as an investment in our community’s future.”

KeyBank operates seven branches in the greater Springfield area.
