Chemours STEAM Machine Expands STEM Learning in West Virginia
Chemours is dedicated to advancing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education for learners of all ages—including the youngest students. Children living near the company's Washington Works facility in West Virginia now benefit from dynamic STEM learning opportunities, made possible by a new mobile education unit called the “STEAM Machine.”

Backed by Chemours and operated by Discovery World on Market, the STEAM Machine is designed to tackle two major obstacles to STEM education in these communities: time and cost. This mobile learning center complements over 70 educational field trips—both guided and self-led—offered at Discovery World from April through May. By bringing hands-on learning directly into schools and neighborhoods, the STEAM Machine expands Discovery World's outreach and helps spark early interest in STEM and problem-solving among young students.

Chemours played a key role in equipping and funding the STEAM Machine, which travels throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley and across West Virginia. Its mission is to make STEM accessible and engaging for youth, encouraging exploration and creativity through interactive experiences. The unit’s launch event is set to take place in Bridgeport, West Virginia, extending the museum’s reach far beyond its physical location.

The STEAM Machine has already been scheduled for several high-profile events, including Chemours' Kids to Work Day, YMCA Healthy Kids Day, the Mid-Ohio Valley Multicultural Festival, and two First Friday events in Marietta, Ohio. These appearances are expected to attract large audiences and promote greater enthusiasm for STEM education in the region. Discovery World itself continues to see impressive community engagement, with more than 48,000 visitors recorded in 2024.

The initiative is part of a long-term STEM education grant provided by Chemours to Discovery World on Market, the only children's museum in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Since 2023, this funding has enabled hundreds of underserved families to visit the museum free of charge and has supported popular programs like Science Saturdays. These events offer fun, hands-on STEM experiences for children and visitors of all ages, helping to build a strong foundation in science and technology education.
