Innovative Lakewood Food Bank Opens with $150K KeyBank Grant

Nourish Pierce County has been awarded a $150,000 grant from KeyBank to aid in the launch of its latest food bank location in Lakewood. This new site aims to tackle food and nutrition insecurity for thousands by offering a fresh approach. Designed to resemble a for-profit grocery store both inside and out, this innovative food bank will transform the traditional experience.

Visitors will be able to shop and "check out" just like at a regular store, but all the food will be free, as with all Nourish locations. This setup will create a welcoming atmosphere that helps normalize food bank use and reduce the stigma often associated with it. With input from an Amazon retail designer, the Lakewood location will be fully ADA-accessible, filled with natural light, and conveniently located near three bus stops with plenty of parking. Nourish, the largest and longest-running food bank network in Pierce County, Washington, is committed to providing nutritious food and support services to those in need with compassion, dignity, and respect.

“At KeyBank, our mission is to help our communities thrive, and we believe that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of a healthy future,” says South Puget Sound Market President Brian Marlow. “We are particularly inspired by Nourish Pierce County’s innovative approach to food assistance, which allows guests to shop with dignity and select the foods that their family will most enjoy.”

“KeyBank’s generous contribution to the new Lakewood food bank is not just a donation; it’s a commitment to nourishing our community’s future,” said Nourish Pierce County CEO Sue Potter. “Their support ensures that we can serve more families in need with compassion, dignity, and respect. We are so grateful for their support and partnership.”
