I'm excited to introduce the Whole Foods Market Foundation, which brings together the efforts of Whole Planet, Whole Kids, and Whole Cities. Although our foundation is new, our commitment to promoting economic opportunities, nutrition, and access to healthy food in communities around the world has been a long-standing mission. This journey began in 2005 with the launch of Whole Planet, followed by Whole Kids in 2011 and Whole Cities in 2014.
While these initiatives initially operated independently, they have always shared the goal of building a more equitable future. For us, this means everyone should have improved access to essential resources, nutritious foods, thriving local food systems, and opportunities to enhance their economic well-being. By uniting our efforts, we aim to broaden our reach and deepen our impact, furthering our collective mission to nourish both people and the planet.
In my 20+ years with Whole Foods Market, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of fresh, healthy food on individuals and communities. I view the work of the Whole Foods Market Foundation as a natural extension of this connection.
The Foundation is dedicated to breaking down barriers to equity, nurturing communities, and fostering meaningful, lasting change globally. In some places, this means funding urban gardens or helping school districts overhaul their lunch programs from processed foods to scratch-cooked meals. Elsewhere, we’re providing financial support to smallholder farmers, microentrepreneurs, and families living in poverty.
Our programs have been empowering individuals and communities for many years, and while our work continues to evolve, our commitment remains strong.
Through this blog, you can stay updated on Whole Cities, Whole Kids, and Whole Planet, learn about grant opportunities, hear stories from the field, and find out how you can contribute to making a global impact. If you’re not yet familiar with all our projects, take a moment to explore them here.
We’re thrilled to have you with us.
