The Biomimicry Institute, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Janine Benyus in 2005, is now accepting applications for the 2025 Ray of Hope Accelerator. This program is designed to support entrepreneurs leveraging nature’s 3.8 billion years of innovation to tackle pressing environmental challenges. Ten selected startups will benefit from comprehensive training, networking opportunities, and $15,000 in non-dilutive funding to advance their ventures and amplify their environmental impact. The application deadline is April 25, 2025.
Since its inception in 2020, the Ray of Hope Accelerator has empowered 49 early-stage startups (ranging from pre-seed to Series A) across 15 countries, with 35% of them led by women. The program has facilitated the deployment of $750,000 in catalytic, non-dilutive funding. Continuing this momentum, the 2025 cohort will welcome another 10 high-impact startups inspired by nature.
Amanda Sturgeon, CEO of The Biomimicry Institute, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming cohort, stating, "We are eager to discover the next visionary founders and the groundbreaking technologies they will bring. These startups have the potential to revolutionize industries, restore ecosystems, and contribute to a more regenerative future."
The Biomimicry Institute is particularly interested in solutions rooted in scientific research, inspired by biological systems, or enabling bio-based innovation. In collaboration with its founding sponsor, The Ray C. Anderson Foundation, the Ray of Hope Accelerator is seeking startups focused on regenerating nature, combating climate change, and moving away from the traditional 'take, make, waste' model.
The selected startups will engage in a six-month accelerator program, receiving over $50,000 worth of in-kind support. This includes mentorship from industry experts, guidance on science-based storytelling, and connections with corporate leaders and mission-driven investors. Additionally, participants will take part in a four-day immersive Nature Retreat to enhance their leadership skills, build community, and embrace biomimicry principles.
“Our first Ray of Hope Accelerator Impact Report highlights the transformative power of nature-inspired innovation,” said Maëlys Renaud, Program Manager of the Ray of Hope Accelerator. “After five years, 97% of our portfolio companies remain active, collectively raising over $125 million in post-program funding. This success underscores the value of careful selection and hands-on support. Every year, we uncover groundbreaking ideas, and we’re excited to see the bold, nature-inspired solutions that emerge in 2025.”
