LA Kings and Partners Lead Beach Cleanup Effort in Long Beach for Earth Month

04/15/2025

In celebration of Earth Month, employees from AEG's LA Kings, the Anaheim Ducks, and Mercury Insurance collaborated with Ryan’s Recycling to help protect the coastal communities of Long Beach, CA.

On April 8, 2025, 170 volunteers gathered for the 4th annual Freeway Faceoff Beach Cleanup event, where they collected 422 pounds of waste, including plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans, preventing harmful pollutants from reaching the ocean and threatening marine life. Through this hands-on conservation effort, the LA Kings reaffirmed their commitment to making a positive, lasting impact across Southern California.

“California's coastlines are vital to local economies, support marine life, and are cherished by both residents and tourists,” said Gabe Gelbard, Manager of Community Relations for the LA Kings. “Pollution poses a serious risk to our oceans and public health, and at the LA Kings, we recognize that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. The Freeway Faceoff Beach Cleanup is an excellent example of how our employees, fans, and partners can join forces to ensure our beaches remain clean for future generations to enjoy.”

The Freeway Faceoff Beach Cleanup has evolved into a meaningful tradition, uniting hockey fans and local residents in support of environmental sustainability. For the past few years, the LA Kings have worked with Ryan’s Recycling, an Orange County-based organization founded in 2012 by Ryan Hickman, who started recycling at the age of three. Ryan has since motivated thousands of children to recycle in their communities, and today, his initiative has helped collect over two million cans and bottles from beaches, contributing to the protection of the ocean and preventing waste from entering landfills.
