World Water Day 2025: DP World’s Commitment to Water Conservation & Sustainability

03/26/2025

As the world gears up to commemorate World Water Day on March 22, 2025, attention turns to the vital role of freshwater and the mounting challenges it faces.

Established by the United Nations, World Water Day highlights the significance of this essential resource while calling for urgent action to address the global water crisis. The occasion serves as a prompt to reaffirm commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

This year’s theme, “Glacier Preservation,” emphasizes the crucial role of glaciers, whose meltwater is fundamental for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy, and ecosystem health. With glaciers melting at an alarming rate, the stability of water supplies is becoming increasingly uncertain, underscoring the need for immediate intervention.

Currently, approximately 703 million people—one in every eleven globally—lack access to safe drinking water. By 2025, half of the world’s population could be residing in water-scarce regions, with projections indicating that by 2030, up to 700 million people may be displaced due to severe water shortages.

Sustainability and Global Initiatives
DP World, a leader in supply chain solutions, is actively tackling these challenges by embedding sustainability into its port operations, community projects, and global collaborations. Through its sustainability strategy, “Our World, Our Future,” the company is committed to reducing its environmental impact and promoting water conservation worldwide.

As a global facilitator of trade and prosperity, DP World plays a crucial role in protecting ocean health, enhancing access to clean water and hygiene, responsibly managing water consumption, and preserving aquatic biodiversity. Sustainable water management is integral to its operations and outreach efforts.

Eco-Friendly Port Operations
DP World Americas is making significant strides in minimizing water pollution, optimizing wastewater management, and safeguarding marine ecosystems. By incorporating sustainable measures within its port operations, the company is setting a precedent for responsible water usage and environmental preservation.

A key initiative is DP World’s issuance of a $100 million Blue Bond, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region. This funding will support water-positive projects, such as improving port infrastructure, enhancing coastal resilience, and mitigating marine pollution.

Furthermore, the company has committed to positively impacting 100 water-stressed basins by 2030, aligning with the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate. This pledge underscores its dedication to conservation through strategic investments in waste reduction, water efficiency, and innovative sustainability solutions.

Community Engagement and Conservation Efforts
DP World acknowledges that safeguarding water resources necessitates collaboration. Across the Americas, the company is leading conservation projects that restore waterways, protect coastal environments, and educate communities about water stewardship. Here are three notable initiatives in honor of World Water Day:
  • Mangrove Restoration in Ecuador Partnering with the CALISUR Foundation, DP World is rehabilitating mangrove forests, which serve as natural carbon sinks, filter pollutants, and provide essential marine habitats. A recent initiative involved planting 250,000 mangrove seedlings across 105 hectares in El Morro and Isla Puná, sequestering 50,719 tons of CO2 and benefiting over 160 local fishers.
  • Marine Environmental Protection in Canada DP World is actively involved in the Marine Environmental Water Quality program at the Port of Prince Rupert, monitoring key water quality indicators such as turbidity, nutrient levels, and contaminants. Additionally, the company has committed to multi-year funding for research and conservation within the Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area in Eastern Canada, supporting efforts to combat invasive species and enhance biodiversity.
  • River Conservation in the Dominican Republic Collaborating with the Santo Domingo Water Fund (FASD), DP World has invested over 6.3 million pesos since October 2022 to protect the Brujuelas River micro-basin. These efforts include reforestation of 20.42 hectares, planting 22,491 trees, and implementing sustainable farming practices to rehabilitate the ecosystem and secure water availability.
A Sustainable Future
At DP World, sustainability follows a “Source-to-Sea” approach, integrating water restoration projects, investments in sanitation infrastructure, and biodiversity conservation.

On World Water Day 2025, DP World reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding water resources, promoting global water security, and fostering a sustainable future. Through education, community initiatives, and strategic partnerships, the company continues to drive impactful change for a water-secure world.
