Revolutionizing Waste Management: MilliporeSigma's Sustainable Solution for Life Science Industry

MilliporeSigma, the U.S. and Canada Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, has joined forces with Sterilis Solutions and Pure Strategies to tackle single-use plastic waste in the life science industry. The Remediator, created by Sterilis, is a device that converts bio-hazardous waste into non-hazardous plastic shreds, offering the potential for lab recycling and mitigating the harmful effects of conventional disposal methods.
 
Teaming up with Pure Strategies, a sustainability consulting firm, MilliporeSigma conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to analyze the environmental impacts of waste processed through the Remediator versus traditional bio-hazardous waste treatment and disposal methods. The assessment unveiled a significant 95% reduction in carbon emissions and a 90% decrease in energy demand when utilizing the Remediator compared to standard autoclave methods.
 
This collaborative effort aims to develop circular solutions that diminish the use of petro-virgin plastic and lessen the environmental footprint of plastic waste disposal within the industry.
