IOC Refugee Olympic Team’s Pre-Games Training Camp in Historic Bayeux, Normandy
The historic town of Bayeux, located in Normandy, France, will serve as the venue for the pre-Games Training Camp for the IOC Refugee Olympic Team, leading up to the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The camp is scheduled from July 15 to 18, prior to the team’s departure for the Olympic Village to participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The camp will provide a platform for team-building and fostering unity among the IOC Refugee Olympic Team members, who are athletes residing and training globally.
A ceremony was held in Bayeux to commemorate the announcement, graced by the presence of Masomah Ali Zada, a member of both the Refugee Olympic Team Tokyo 2020 and the IOC Athletes’ Commission, along with delegates from the Olympic Refuge Foundation. Attendees were treated to a screening of the documentary ‘We Dare to Dream’, directed by Oscar-nominated, refugee filmmaker Waad al-Kateab. The film chronicles the journey of five refugee athletes as they gear up for and compete in Tokyo 2020.
The ceremony was part of the Prix Bayeux, an esteemed international award event that honors the bravery and commitment of war correspondents. Given Normandy’s history and events like the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy War Correspondents Prize, the region resonates deeply with the global refugee crisis.
Currently, 63 Refugee Athletes Scholarship-holders are receiving support and rigorously training in hopes of being chosen for the Paris Olympics. Collectively, they represent 13 sports, originate from 12 nations, and reside in 23 host countries.
