AMD Promotes STEM Education with Global Summer Programs and Hackathons

09/28/2024

For many students, summer offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy long days, great weather, and a break from school. However, students in underserved communities often lack access to programs that support their academic growth during this period, particularly in subjects like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). AMD understands the importance of continuous learning and seeks to combat the “summer slide” while introducing students to STEM fields, increasing the likelihood that they will pursue these disciplines in school. This summer, AMD offices worldwide provided students with various engaging activities, including visits to AMD sites and participation in hackathons.

Exploring STEM Careers
Students from organizations such as The Hidden Genius Project, Visions of Science, South High School, and Breakthrough Central Texas visited AMD locations in San Jose, Markham, Boxborough, and Austin. During these visits, employees, interns, and members of Employee Resource Groups like Advancing Black Leadership Excellence and the AMD Women’s Forum participated in career panels, sharing their experiences and offering valuable advice. Additionally, students engaged in hands-on STEM projects with AMD volunteers, exploring creativity and problem-solving by building computers, conducting science experiments, designing towers with limited materials, and assembling solar-powered cars for races.

Competitive Spirit
In Longmont, AMD hosted its 6th annual AMD PYNQ™ Bootcamp, where 38 middle and high school students participated in a week-long hackathon led by AMD interns. The event focused on using AMD Kria™ System-on-Modules and PYNQ programming to create AI-based solutions under the theme “Deploying AI in the Real World.” Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, volunteers organized a mini-hackathon for 45 students in grades eight and nine, challenging them to solve real-world problems using tools like breadboards, sensors, and Arduino platforms. With guidance from AMD employees, students completed their innovative projects in just a few hours and presented them to a panel of judges.

In Taipei, AMD partnered with New Taipei City's Department of Education to support the FIRST Robotics Competition. At a poster contest, 210 students displayed STEM projects to AMD employees, showcasing their creativity. Later, 30 teams participated in the "2024 National High School FIRST Robotics Competition Off-Season Event," where they designed robots to shoot foam rings into targets, demonstrating their technical skills and teamwork to judges.

STEM Learning at Home
To further promote STEM education, AMD volunteers assembled and distributed 2,000 STEM kits to six global nonprofit organizations. These kits contained fun engineering challenges like programming robots to teach coding and making light-up wearable devices to explain circuitry, all aimed at sparking interest in engineering and technology.

AMD continues to be deeply committed to fostering STEM education and preparing the next generation of innovators. More than 2,500 students participated in enriching STEM activities this summer, while AMD employees were able to see firsthand the positive impact of their efforts on their communities.
