The Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability, introduced by the International Dairy Federation (IDF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) during the IDF World Dairy Summit in Paris in October 2024, received formal endorsement from Tetra Pak, a global leader in food processing and packaging solutions. The endorsement was announced on November 19, 2024, at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, hosted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
This declaration underscores the dairy industry’s commitment to advancing sustainability across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It showcases concrete actions undertaken by dairy operators globally to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sends a strong message to policymakers, governments, and the public about the industry’s proactive approach. Building on the foundation of the 2016 Dairy Declaration of Rotterdam, the Paris Declaration aligns with the UN’s 2030 Agenda, emphasizing inclusivity and sustainable progress.
The endorsement ceremony took place at the Swedish Pavilion at COP29, during a bilateral meeting between IDF President Gilles Froment and Tetra Pak’s Executive Vice President for Processing Solutions and Equipment, Charles Brand.
Gilles Froment highlighted the importance of Tetra Pak’s support, stating, “Tetra Pak’s endorsement amplifies the reach of the Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability and demonstrates the global dairy sector’s commitment to climate action and achieving the SDGs. We encourage all leaders in the dairy industry to join us in signing and supporting this initiative.”
Charles Brand added, “The Paris Dairy Declaration on Sustainability represents a crucial commitment to transforming the dairy value chain sustainably. At Tetra Pak, sustainability has been central to our work in the dairy industry. This declaration aligns with our mission to drive positive change in global food systems, and we are pleased to endorse it today.”
The Paris Dairy Declaration emphasizes tangible commitments by dairy operators across key sustainability areas, including climate action, nutrition, health, economic security, and the stewardship of natural resources. It aims to demonstrate the industry’s dedication and adaptability while engaging stakeholders worldwide.
