Duke Energy Grants $500K for Storm Preparedness in North Carolina

03/19/2025

The Duke Energy Foundation has announced a new $500,000 investment aimed at enhancing storm preparedness in communities across North Carolina. Eligible organizations can now apply for individual grants of up to $25,000.

“The effects of Hurricane Helene last fall highlighted the critical role that collaboration between emergency response teams, public agencies, and nonprofit groups plays during natural disasters,” said Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy’s North Carolina state president. “We’re honored to help strengthen the storm readiness of the communities we serve, especially as they continue to grow and pursue new ways to build resilience against extreme weather.”

The grants will support a range of initiatives focused on disaster preparedness and emergency response, such as:
  • Programs that foster cooperation among agencies, sectors, and communities during disaster planning and response efforts.
  • Innovative local strategies for preparing for natural disasters and extreme weather conditions.
  • Community education programs, including training sessions, emergency kits, and preparedness materials.
  • Specialized training programs for first responders dealing with natural disaster scenarios.
Storm preparedness has been a key focus area for the Duke Energy Foundation, which has contributed nearly $5.6 million toward such initiatives in North Carolina since 2020. Past funding has supported projects like the installation of flood gauges in Wilmington, distributing weather radios in underserved Raleigh neighborhoods, launching a tethered drone program in Person County for public safety, and purchasing swift water rescue equipment for the Town of Harrisburg.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. ET on April 25. Organizations interested in applying can visit the Duke Energy Foundation’s website for more details.
