Join the Arbor Day Foundation’s Planet Pledge for a Greener Future
The Arbor Day Foundation has introduced a new campaign designed to turn individual eco-friendly actions into a collective force for good. Through this initiative, participants can commit to specific environmentally friendly habits—no matter how big or small—and, in return, the Foundation will plant a tree in a forest in need.

“Hope for our planet is powerful, but it’s time to take action,” said Dan Lambe, CEO of the Arbor Day Foundation. “This campaign gives people around the world the chance to work together for a healthier future. Every contribution matters because, collectively, small actions can lead to a significant global impact.”

Here’s how it works: After making a pledge at arborday.org/planet-pledge, the Foundation will plant a tree in honor of that commitment. Participants will also receive helpful tips to maintain their new eco-friendly habit.

No effort is too small when it comes to making a difference. Here are ten simple ways to take part in the Planet Pledge:
  1. Use a reusable water bottle or coffee cup. Switching from disposable to reusable containers helps cut down on waste and pollution.
  2. Opt for biking, public transportation, or carpooling. Choosing to bike instead of drive, even once a day, can cut personal carbon emissions by 67%. Regularly using public transit or carpooling can reduce an individual’s carbon footprint by nearly 50%.
  3. Wash clothes in cold water. Around 90% of a washing machine’s energy use goes toward heating water. Using cold water instead can conserve energy and lower utility bills.
  4. Repair clothing instead of discarding it. Fixing worn-out clothes helps keep textiles out of landfills, where 92 million tons of clothing waste accumulate annually.
  5. Bring reusable bags when shopping. This small habit helps reduce plastic waste in both urban and marine environments.
  6. Take shorter showers. Cutting down shower time can save approximately 45 gallons of water per week.
  7. Volunteer at a community garden. These green spaces provide fresh food access and support local biodiversity.
  8. Make recurring donations to environmental causes. Even a small financial contribution can make a meaningful impact on ecosystems and communities in need.
  9. Compost food scraps and yard waste. Composting helps minimize food waste, enrich soil, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  10. Plant a tree. Trees improve air quality, combat extreme heat, and help manage flood risks, making them vital for healthier communities.
By participating in this initiative, individuals can contribute to a larger movement that fosters a more sustainable planet—one small action at a time.
