Griffith Foods: Advancing Workplace Safety & Sustainability in 2023
At Griffith Foods, we prioritize enhancing workplace health and safety standards. Our Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management Program aligns with the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. Currently, five of our 20 facilities hold ISO 45001 certification, and we are working diligently to certify more sites. Through consistent risk assessments, hazard identification walkthroughs, and audits, we continuously improve our safety practices.

Key Achievements and Strategic Progress
In fiscal year 2023, we achieved significant advancements in health and safety, including:
  • Lower Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR): A global reduction of over 35% in TRIR compared to FY22, reflecting fewer medical treatment incidents per 1 million work hours.
  • Progress Toward Zero Injuries: We continue to make strides in eliminating life-altering incidents and minimizing lost-time injuries, maintaining a strong commitment to a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees.
2023 Policy and Management Enhancements
Our commitment to fostering a safety-first culture is evident in the following initiatives:
Cultural and Behavioral Safety Improvements
  • “Safety Built In” Workshops: These leadership workshops focus on enhancing safety culture and have been conducted in Scarborough, Canada; Alsip, Illinois; Lithonia, Georgia; and Costa Rica, with further expansion planned for FY24.
  • Employee Engagement: Regular workplace observations and continuous improvement processes empower employees to contribute to incident reduction.
  • Ergonomic Risk Management: A global, systematic approach has been adopted to mitigate ergonomic risks related to material handling, creating safer work environments.
Advancements in Global Safety Systems
  • New Technology: We implemented enhanced software to streamline incident tracking, corrective actions, and employee safety feedback.
  • Workplace Health and Safety Perception Survey: Insights from our first survey have been shared with employees, and actions are being taken across manufacturing sites to address feedback and improve safety performance.
Continuous Improvement and Compliance
Our health and safety committees play a critical role in driving progress:
  • Health and Safety Committees: These site-level groups address specific challenges, lead localized training initiatives, and report to both our Global WHS Committee (monthly) and the WHS Community (quarterly).
By embedding a culture of safety, Griffith Foods ensures employees work in environments that prioritize their health and wellbeing. We remain steadfast in our efforts to advance workplace safety and build on our successes.
