Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), a global leader in express transportation, has recently teamed up with the Society of Wilderness (SoW) to address water resource issues. Under this partnership, FedEx mobilized its employees and their families for a cleanup initiative along the Touchian River in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The effort resulted in the removal of approximately 181 kilograms of waste, demonstrating FedEx's commitment to environmental care and support for Taiwan's ecological health.
The Touchian River, vital for the Greater Hsinchu region, was chosen for its significance in providing over 90% of the area's water, crucial for agriculture, local livelihoods, and the operations at the Hsinchu Science Park. This river supports Taiwan's high-tech industry, which relies on electronic components, the country's top export in 2023.
“FedEx is dedicated to promoting sustainable development within our communities and aiding in local environmental conservation,” stated Michael Chu, managing director of FedEx Taiwan. “The Touchian River is essential for Hsinchu, and our continued collaboration with the Society of Wilderness reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility. We aim to enhance Taiwan’s ecological environment, grow with local communities, and work towards a sustainable future.”
Liu Yueh-Mei, Honorary Chairperson of the Society of Wilderness, emphasized, “A clean river leads to a blue sea. We're thrilled to work again with FedEx on conserving Taiwan's water resources. Our clean-ups showed that plastic bottles, bags, and disposable utensils are the most common pollutants, highlighting the need to cut down on plastic use and single-use products. Large waste items found in the streams also point to the need for stricter controls on dumping waste into our water systems. We look forward to more entities joining us in this environmental mission.”
In addition to the cleanups on December 14 and 28, 2024, FedEx and SoW organized an environmental seminar named “For Blue Seas, Start with Clean Streams.” This event aimed to highlight the beauty of Taiwan's water bodies and educate participants on the significance of natural conservation. Through these activities, FedEx encourages its team to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, particularly by minimizing plastic waste. FedEx continues to collaborate with local NGOs to promote and sustain environmental health, fostering a cycle of positive ecological impact.
